Focus On CybersecurityBack

01/27/2017

Our January meeting of Health TechNet was held on Friday, January 27 at the office of Nelson Mullins in Washington, D.C.

The feature topic was a discussion of the latest trends and problems with cyber security in the healthcare field.  With so much recent attention to hacking on an international scale, this was an important subject to revisit. As we are all aware, healthcare organizations and even medical devices are constantly under cyber attack, and the nature of the threats, the current means of protection, and legal obligations for safeguards must be understood.  Our discussion was led by three speakers: 1) Shahid Shah, who is the CEO of technology consulting firm Netspective, and also advisor to OMB and the White House; 2) Jeanne Greathouse, who is a Senior Director in the medical device division of Battelle; and 3) David Katz, Esq, who leads Nelson Mullins’ Privacy and Information Security Practice Group and provides legal advice on matters related to the privacy laws affecting multiple sectors of the economy including retail, financial services, education, healthcare, and technology.

We also had a discussion of the current state of the transition of the Affordable Care Act under the Trump administration, and Deanne Kasim of Santesis Solutions made a presentation and led a discussion of these issues.
